The Contrada of the Tortoise is one of the seventeen contradas of Siena, and it is located in the Terzo di Città. Its emblem is a tortoise on a field of gold scattered with blue Savoy knots alternated with natural daisy flowers. Its colors are yellow and blue in equal parts. The motto of the contrada is “Strength and Constancy Dwelling.”

The contrada holds the title of Priora for having hosted the first meeting of the Magistrato delle Contrade. The Terzo it belongs to is Città. The military companies of the contrada are Porta all’Arco and Sant’Agata. The allied contradas of the Tartuca are the Leocorno, the Nicchio, the Onda, and the Selva. The opposing contrada to the Tartuca is the Chiocciola. The patron saint of the contrada is Saint Anthony of Padua. The titular feast is celebrated around June 13th. The contrada’s corporation is that of stone masons.

The Contrada of the Tortoise is one of the oldest contradas in Siena and has a long and rich history. The contrada is deeply cherished by its contradaioli, who are always ready to support it in its races in the Palio.
