La Loggia Della Mercanzia
Just beyond Piazza del Campo there is an obligatory destination for art Sienese art lovers, there is the Loggia della Mercanzia, a work that echoes the Gothic and Renaissance styles and that arises at the Croce del Travaglio .
La Loggia della Mercanzia is a marvelous work created by Pietro del Minella and Sano di Matteo between 1417 and 1428 and exhibits a large open gallery and three arches on pillars with fantastic capitals.
Inside the tabernacles, La Loggia displays some statues of saints made by Vecchietta (San Paolo and San Pietro) and by Antonio Federighi (San Ansano, San Savino and San Vittore) .
Then there are two marble benches with two representations: Distinguished Roman Men of Federighi and Cardinal Virtues of Urbano da Cortona.
The Loggia della Mercanzia is the most imposing artistic symbol of the mercantile power held by the city from the Middle Ages onwards and is one of the attractions of the center of Siena that will remain there in the heart.
